Honeycomb calcite is a most unusual and impressive form of calcite that has been found exclusively in one locale in the world: Utah in the U.S.  Even though honeycomb calcite is a fairly new discovery, the stone is actually quite old… 150 – 200 million years old.  Its colors, patterns, variations in translucency/transparency, and ability to accept a high polish sets this type of calcite apart from other forms of calcite.

This beauty gives off a luminous glow when accentuated by artificial, natural, direct, or indirect lighting. Honeycomb calcite also does not fade as readily in sunlight as other forms of calcite.   Honeycomb calcite’s coloring ranges from a soft, pale sunshine lemon yellow to a deep rich honey golden amber depending upon the thickness of the stone. The gorgeous coloring is attributed to sulfur deposits that are in the area of its formation.  Its patterns change from a tight “honey sugar” to a “petrified honey” look. This has to do with the cell growth, grouping, and closeness of the hexagonal cells.
